Registration of Tete Goat as GI In Mozambique, first Geographical Indication of an ARIPO member state

On 15 June 2020, Tete Goat (Cabrito de Tete) was registered as a Geographical Indication in Mozambique, with the support of WIPO and FAO. It is the first GI registered at an ARIPO member state.

After registration, EUIPO, as implementing agency of the “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Action for Africa” (AfrIPI) project, will support the consolidation of the value chain and the commercialisation strategy of this GI, through the Commercial Launch of the GI and two trainings for producers, which took place on October and November 2020.

Cabrito de Tete is a local goat breed, from Tete province in Mozambique. The province of Tete has a goat population estimated in about 300 thousand animals, which has been increasing over the last years, and is classified as the first goat producer in this country.

Cabrito de Tete’s meat is juicy, with little fat, with a very sweet aroma, and a persistent taste in the mouth.
