New Edition of the Manual for Geographical Indications in Africa
he European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has just published the third edition of the Manual for Geographical Indications in Africa containing updates, produced in the context of the EU-funded IP cooperation Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation project in Africa (AfrIPI), in partnership with the European Commission. It is now available online in Arabic, English, French and Portuguese.
Over the last 20 years, geographical indications (GIs) have emerged as a global phenomenon, generating growing interest among producers, consumers, scholars and policymakers. The EUIPO, as an international GI registration authority is dedicated to fostering a brighter future for Africa’s unique products. The experience of GIs in Africa shows that they deserve solid protection, both nationally and internationally, and are a valuable development tool.
The manual serves as a comprehensive guide for producers or producer groups, control bodies and intellectual property (IP) offices, outlining the necessary steps, requirements and outcomes associated with GI protection.
The first of its kind GI manual dedicated to the African continent covers key topics, starting with the current progress made on GIs in Africa regarding factors considered crucial internationally for a GI to be successful. It goes on to cover key issues to address and improve the performance of GIs in the continent.
The manual on GIs in Africa wants to contribute to the successful implementation of the Continental Strategy for Geographical Indications in Africa (2018-2023) and an equally important tool to grasp the lessons learnt in the continent and elsewhere. In addition, it helps find clearer answers to ensure African states fully benefit from the GI system.
The EUIPO leads the EU's international cooperation on intellectual property rights, including geographical indications. The EUIPO was recently entrusted with managing the registration of craft and industrial GIs at EU level, the first applications can be filed from 1 December 2025 on.
