The Pomegranate of Gabès is produced in the oasis of Gabès on the coast and enjoys a good reputation, especially in Gulf countries to which they are exported. In order to assess the European export market potential, a commercial partnership with a local exporter led to selling a limited volume of pomegranates in a wholesale market in Rungis (France) with a specific reference to its origin-linked quality. This experience permitted testing of wholesalers’ interest, established relationships with traders and checked the guarantee system’s efficiency. |

| Senegal | Support to the registration of the Madd from Casamance as a GI | FAO / WIPO | Madd (Saba senegalensis) is a forest fruit from the Casamance region in Senegal, sold fresh or as a processed product such as jam, juice, fudge or syrup. The leaves are used in the preparation of sauces and condiments. Madd is rich in energy, vitamin C, fibre, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. In 2017, FAO) supported a survey to assess the eligibility of Madd for GI registration. Since then, FAO and WIPO are supporting stakeholders coordination at local and national levels towards the GI process. The objective is to create added value to all the stakeholders of the value chain, to strengthen its organization (pickers, processors, traders) to preserve the traditional use of Madd and to preserve also the fruits Madd, threatened of extinction and the forests because of sustainable practices. The Association pour la protection et la promotion du Madd de Casamance (APPIGMAC) has been constituted in November 2019. The code of practice will be soon soon finalized. The application for registration should take place in 2021. |
